Kopi Luwak ?Its Origin and How It Is Processed

If you want to enjoy the best cup of coffee, you should consider buying the kopi luwak. The same goes if you want to give the best gift to someone or you just want to create a memorable impression during a party or gathering. Kopi luwak is also known as civet coffee, and it is one of the most expensive beverages in the world. Besides its expensive price, this coffee is actually processed after the coffee beans are put through the digestive system of a palm civet. Now that you already know the origin of this coffee, do you still have the guts to try it?

Regardless its unique processing way, kopi luwak is priced at a surprisingly high price – a pound of it may cost around a hundred to six hundred dollars! Almost all other coffee beans are normally priced for about ten dollars a pound, so just imagine how expensive the kopi luwak is. Due to its outrageous price, this coffee is not commonly served in regular coffee shops. It may be available in luxury coffee shops, high-end restaurants and five-star hotels. Another reason why this coffee is not available in abundance is due to its small-scaled production.

Not everyone has the guts to drink kopi luwak even though it is known to be one of the expensive beverages available at present. Other than putting the coffee beans into the digestive system of a palm civet, the remaining process of making the kopi luwak is quite the same. This coffee is made from the regular coffee beans and they are put through the same roasting and brewing process. The only difference is that the coffee beans are processed after they are put through the civet’s digestive system. Don’t worry about hygiene issues though. This is because the coffee beans come out whole from the civet.

Literally a palm civet consumes all kinds of coffee beans – from Arabica beans to Liberica and Robusta. Immediately after the coffee beans are passed by the civet, the beans are washed thoroughly before being dried the natural way, i.e. exposed to the heat of sunlight. When the coffee beans are completely dried, they are brewed to make what people call as kopi luwak.

Kopi luwak is widely found in the region of Java, Sumatera and Bali in Indonesia. It is also available in the Philippines, and those who produce this coffee can definitely earn quite an impressive residual income. Some people call the kopi luwak as the weasel coffee. This is because weasel is similar to a civet or a rodent.

Most people are not brave enough even to have a sip of the luwak coffee. They would rather feel comfortable with the ten dollar coffee beans. However, this scenario is understandable – not all are willing to drink coffee beans that have been digested in a palm civet’s stomach.

If you are a person who adores taking up challenges, perhaps you might want to try the luwak coffee. After all, luwak coffee or kopi luwak is a high-end product so you must try it at least once.
